Corten steel plate is probably best known for the orange weathered look. But it starts off as raw Corten steel sheets which is silvery grey in colour. After 3 to 10 months exposed to water and oxygen it begins to corrode and form an orange and brown coating. While this looks like rust, it is actually a clever part of the steel’s creation. The addition of chromium, nickel and copper means that the steel forms a protective patina, which helps it remain strong, durable and perfect for use outdoors. Recently the auburn coloured steel has become fashionable for home, retail and leisure design too.
